Pedestrian struck by car, killed in San Ysidro – The San Diego Union

An elderly man was struck by a car and killed Monday night in San Ysidro, police said.

The fatal crash happened a few minutes before 9:25 p.m. on Beyer Boulevard near Del Sur Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

The collision and ensuing investigation prompted police to shut down Beyer Boulevard in both directions between Del Sur Boulevard and Smythe Avenue, Buttle said. It was unknown how long the closure would last.

Details of the crash weren’t immediately available, but the victim was an elderly man, Buttle said. Police radio traffic indicated he was struck by a Ford Mustang.

The Mustang’s driver told a police dispatcher that the victim walked in front of his car. Witnesses first reported the man was bleeding and neither awake nor breathing, according to police radio traffic. Officers arrived within minutes and reported the victim was bleeding heavily, had no pulse and had suffered a severe fracture to one of his legs.

He was pronounced dead within about 20 minutes of the crash, according to Buttle.

A Sig Alert was issued for Beyer Boulevard and drivers were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
